The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Celebrex to treat pain in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in combination with acetaminophen in December, according to a letter from the US Food and Drug Administration.
The drug, which is made by Merck, carries a risk of serious side effects, including heart attack, stroke and kidney problems. Celebrex can lead to kidney problems, blindness, and death. Its FDA-approved use has also been linked to increased risk of breast cancer.
The letter, written by the FDA's senior medical team, states that the drug does not have any known adverse effects on cardiovascular or gastrointestinal systems. However, it noted that the risk of serious problems is low and that Celebrex is an effective treatment for the condition.
"FDA approval for Celebrex has been a landmark drug safety landmark," said the letter, from Merck, to the FDA's medical director, Dr. Steven Nissen. "Today we've demonstrated that Celebrex, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is a safe and effective drug therapy for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. We believe Celebrex is the first non-inhibiting nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug for pain management and osteoarthritis. We also believe that it is safe and effective in treating pain."
The FDA's approval comes as more and more drugs for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are being developed. In a letter published in theJournal of the American College of Rheumatology, Dr. Nissen wrote that the FDA's drug safety and efficacy committee recommended that drugs such as Celebrex not be marketed as "an off-label use for conditions that are not specifically identified as causing the adverse events reported in the FDA product database."
The FDA said that the drug has a risk of serious side effects, including heart attack and stroke. It has also been linked to kidney problems, blindness, and death.
In addition, Celebrex has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and increased risk of bladder cancer. Celebrex, which is FDA-approved for treating pain, is also a prescription drug.
The letter is from Dr. Steven Nissen and is published online in theNew England Journal of Medicine.
